DEMOLITION DERBY - FROM INSANITY TO PROFESSIONAL SPORT
Little is known of the early demolition derby but the common thread possessed by these drivers is "insanity". In 1953, race promoters and speedway operators alike shared the common fear of declining audiences. For the driver, winning became an obsession. In efforts to reclaim the spectators, race promoters at the Civic Stadium, in Buffalo, New York; recommended an all-new "Wreck-Em-Race".
Hopefully, this would satisfy thrill seekers with a "throw-them-to-the-lions" appetite for excitement. Daredevils lined up at the "Pit Gate" for the chance to compete. They brought crumpled, rusted, nondescript "junket" automobiles. Rules were non-existent, drivers were told two basic bits of information: first, automobiles
must remain on the racetrack and secondly, the objectivewas to eliminate the other cars from competition. A quarter-mile of dirt racetrack was used to build up speed and evade the other competitors in a "do or die" automobile grudge match.
As the green flag signaled the start, the spontaneous roar of missing, un-mufflered, dilapidated automobiles
resembled the freeway at rush hour and herds of stampeding elephants. The winners of these early contests possessed the attributes of a true showman: recklessness, insanity, nonchalance and bravery.
But today's Demolition Derby, bares little resemblance to its predecessors of circa 1950. The only reminder is massive spectator appeal and the objective of the event. The method of the presentation, however, is very different. Today's Demolition Derby driver is a cautious and cagey competitor looking for the most
effective way to damage his opponent's automobile. Today, rigid safety regulations govern Demolition Derby
automobiles. Likewise, safety considerations, appropriate attire and skilled driving techniques are utilized in the tactical approach in winning the "Championship" trophy and the coveted title of "Champion".

Championship Figure 8 Racing is a form of action racing using compact cars to enhance the excitement for drivers and spectators. This form of figure-8, unlike other forms, will be in an area of 100 feet wide X 300 feet long!
Utilizing smaller lightweight cars takes on all the excitement of full-sized cars without the danger to the drivers. The speed will be up to 30 miles per hour with 5 to 8 cars allowed on the track at one time. Drivers need to out-think and out-maneuver their competitors in order to win with sheer chaos at the 2 figure-8 crossover points.
Because of the challenge and thrill this event presents, its popularity is growing rapidly.
